GAIT/DENT

GAIT/DENT combines the power of OASIS's work order, reporting, and inventory mechanisms with ingate and outgate processing, equipment inspection, and damaged equipment handling. It operates on a user's RF (radio frequency) hand held terminal to provide a convenient, efficient method for inputting and retrieving crucial container, chassis, and trailer information.

GAIT/DENT has been customized to serve the gate activity and damage reporting needs of 55 intermodal ramps in the United States.

Reduced Clerical and Supervisory Costs

- Paperless computer-aided management significantly reduces key punching, paper handling, and errors thus reducing clerical and supervisory costs
- Computer-managed gate procedures and damage tracking allow yards to process higher volumes without the need for additional personnel

Fewer Capital Expenditures

- Unlike "fixed position" systems, GAIT/DENT is not limited by the characteristics of the physical plant. Gate operators can move up and down a line of trucks, trailers, and containers inputting gate and damage information into RF hand held terminals as they go. This flexibility of movement allows personnel to process higher traffic volumes without costly renovations or expansions to intermodal facilities
- Users can perform a multitude of tasks (unit inquiry, ingate, outgate, damage inspections) from a single radio frequency hand held terminal, thus reducing the need for additional computing equipment and information system infrastructure

Improved Throughput

- GAIT/DENT works in conjunction with the OASIS interface to retrieve and display stored data (i.e., destination, load/empty status, hazardous materials indicator, pick up number, etc.). Gate operators can access this information in real-time, thus improving throughput
- Gate clerks can print and reprint arrival and departure J-1 forms on their hip-mounted printers. This allows drivers to stay in their trucks and thus, move through the gate faster reducing 'wait' times at entry and departure

Reduced Repair Costs

- Railroad personnel become active participants in the entire repair process. Managers are able to track damage from initial reporting, to estimation, to authorization of repairs
- Tracks the repair process itself, maintaining data on repair parts, costs, and labor. This process allows users to receive accurate up-to-the-minute information at every stage of the inspection and repair process as opposed to receiving a bill months later for damage with no corroborating documentation regarding the unit, the inspection, or the repair

Superior Customer Service

- Streamlines ingates to a one-stage process, improving service time at the gate
- Maintains accurate, electronic data to provide users with up-to-the-minute information about every step in the inspection and repair process
- To assist customers with outgates, the system tracks pickup numbers to insure that drivers leave the yard with the correct units and provides warnings for units on hold or containing hazardous materials

Improved Communications

- Preserves data integrity by allowing gate clerks to input all required information for arriving and departing equipment on radio frequency hand held terminals. Users receive immediate, electronic access to relevant unit data and damage records due to the seamless integration of GAIT/DENT's gate and inspection processes with the OASIS storage and reporting mechanisms
- Insures the continual processing of gate activities even in the event of a mainframe outage
